I was recently reminded about God’s love for us, about how boundless it is. And ever since, I’ve been trying to imagine what we did or what we are actively doing to deserve His love.
Imagine loving someone so much that when you find out that they are in trouble, due to their own power of will; you send your innocent child to replace them in their ‘trouble’. Imagine the thoughts that would be running through your child’s mind. I am going to speculate that they would be thinking something along the lines of “why would my parent -who loves me- allow me to bear the consequences of somebody else’ actions?” right?
I do not think that there is an easy explanation for why anyone would sacrifice their child for someone else… except for maybe love. I inserted a maybe in there because, there are people that I love but I don’t think I would be able to let go of my child (or is it just me?). And of course, the love I am speaking about here is a divine love – Agape. A love that is not easy for us to understand because it goes against and is outside of all reason. It is a love only God understands.
And this is exactly what God did, He sent His Son to die for a people that He loved (in advance) so much that could not bear the thought of them all dying even if it is due to their own actions. He allowed His Son to become a sacrifice for our sins in order for us to get another opportunity to know and feel His love for us. John 3:16 is case and point for the above statement.
“But God demonstrates His own Love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” Romans 5:8
In the last verse of Psalm 23, David tells us that God loves us so much; that He is endlessly perusing us with His love and will continue to do so until the day we die. This is another thing I sometimes find difficult to comprehend, because I am not always the most considerate of God. I sometimes put Him at the back of my mind and consider Him last when I’m making decisions, but He never considers me last, and I am always at the forefront of His mind.
C. S Lewis in Mere Christianity says it well “… God has infinite attention, infinite leisure to spare for each one of us… when Christ died, He died for you individually just as much as if you’d been the only man in the world.”
There are many examples in the bible about how God considered the wants of the Israelites even after they lived contrary to the commands He gave them. One such example is found in the book of 1 Samuel chapter 8 when the Israelites demand for God to give them a king to lord over them even though they had God. I can only think that He loved them so much He was willing to give in to their desires not because they were good, but in order to demonstrate His willingness to lovingly listen to His creatures. He even provides them with a warning of how they will be lorded over. This just goes to show that God will never allow us face situations that He has not warned us about (is that not love?).
And guess what? God still loved them after they decided they wanted to be ruled over by a mere mortal instead of the sovereign God. Same applies to us today when we commit sin, God loves us in spite of it.
If my cousin Lissa was asked today to read a passage of scripture, she would most likely open the book of Romans, flip over to chapter 8 and scroll down to verses 35 through to 39. She would then proceed to read about God’s love.
In my bible these verses are preceded by the heading ‘God’s Everlasting Love’ and I conquer that His love is forever. God’s love is like a circle, it has no beginning and so it has no end. And again, just like a circle with its infinite number of sides, God’s love for us is also infinite.
The point of this post is to remind us that we are never too far gone for God, we are never too broken for God, and so we can never be separated from Him. If we ever feel a drift in our relationship with Him, it is not because He has caused it but because we did. Let us make it right and go back to our first and constant love.
There is honestly no better or higher love separate of God.
And nothing can separate us from His Love.
Until the next one, Stay faithful!
